How SMD Resistor Codes Work

3-digit code: First two digits are the significant figures, third digit is the multiplier (power of 10). Example: 103 = 10 × 10³ = 10,000Ω = 10kΩ. 220 = 22 × 10⁰ = 22Ω.

4-digit code: First three digits are significant figures, fourth is the multiplier. Used for 1% precision resistors. Example: 1002 = 100 × 10² = 10,000Ω = 10kΩ.

EIA-96 code: Two digits (01-96) refer to a lookup table value, followed by a letter indicating multiplier. Example: 01C = 100 × 100 = 10,000Ω = 10kΩ. The letter C = ×100.

R notation: Used for values under 10Ω. The R indicates the decimal point. Example: 4R7 = 4.7Ω, 0R1 = 0.1Ω, R10 = 0.10Ω.

SMD Capacitor Codes

Numeric codes are always in picofarads (pF). 104 = 10 × 10⁴ pF = 100,000 pF = 100nF = 0.1μF. 4n7 = 4.7nF. 2p2 = 2.2pF. 1u0 = 1.0μF.

The letter at the end of some ceramic capacitor codes indicates tolerance: J = ±5%, K = ±10%, M = ±20%, Z = +80%/-20%.

FAQ

Why do some SMD resistors have no marking? Resistors smaller than 0603 (1.6mm × 0.8mm) often have no marking because there's not enough space. For these, you must rely on the tape/reel label or measure with a multimeter.

What's the difference between 0603 and 0805? 0603 is 1.6mm × 0.8mm; 0805 is 2.0mm × 1.25mm. 0603 is more common in modern designs but harder to hand-solder. 0805 is easier for prototypes and can handle more power.

How do I know if a resistor is 1% or 5%? 4-digit codes are typically 1% (E96 series). 3-digit codes are typically 5% (E24 series). EIA-96 codes are always 1%.
