About QSL Cards
QSL cards are physical confirmation cards sent by amateur radio operators to confirm two-way radio contact (QSO). The term "QSL" comes from the Q-code meaning "I confirm receipt of your transmission." QSL cards are a cherished tradition in amateur radio, often collected and displayed.
Standard QSL card dimensions are 5.5 inches × 3.5 inches (140mm × 89mm), the same as a postcard. This size fits in standard photo albums and postcard holders. The front typically shows the operator's callsign, QSO details, and often a photo or design representing the station or location.
For digital QSLs (eQSL), the card can be saved as an image and uploaded to eQSL.cc, QRZ, or emailed directly to the other operator. Many operators appreciate both physical and digital QSLs.
QSL Card Etiquette
- Always include your complete callsign prominently
- Include date, time (UTC), band, mode, and RST for both stations
- Include your QTH and grid square for award tracking
- Leave space for a postage stamp (for international cards)
- Include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) when requesting cards
